Style Profile: Alyssa Garrison

Alyssa Garrison is not your typical fashion and lifestyle blogger. She is a pastel loving, social-media savvy, trendsetter. And much more. She describes her style as "fun" and "fairytale meets urban life, sparkle magic meets the everyday". 

Alyssa has experienced many things when it comes to fashion such as working in the retail world, blogging, and working as a creative director for a handful of companies in her city. She has had her amazing blog, Random Acts of Pastel, for two whole years now!

I have followed Alyssa on Instagram and on her blog for just over a year now, and have been wanting to chat with her for a while about some of the amazing and fun things she has been able to accomplish and create through fashion and social media. I had the pleasure of getting to ask Alyssa a few questions via email. She is a super sweet girl with a very unique sense of style, that I really admire!

Mikayla:

How would you describe your personal style?

Alyssa:

Fun! I always like to play dress up when it comes to getting ready each day. Life is short- clothing should be exciting and make you feel happy! My style is always evolving, but in general it's sort of fairytale meets urban life, sparkle magic meets the everyday.  I like to play with colour, statement pieces; and novelty items (like my gold horse clutch purse or a glittery pair of sneakers!)

Mikayla:

Talk a bit more about how you landed your job (being a creative director for business' Instagram accounts) and also which companies do you work with?

Alyssa:

My boss came across my Instagram and emailed me right away to set up a meeting. He offered me a job on the spot, and I've been with the agency for just over 6 months! I'm basically a creative director for Instagram accounts, which is pretty cool. Some clients include @hermajestyspleasure and @littlefin, but they are always changing! 

Mikayla:

What other jobs have you had (in fashion or other) leading up to this job you have now? 

Alyssa:

I worked in retail for most of my life, which I loved and hated. I also did social media for small businesses in-house for awhile, and for years I wrote for an awesome indie fashion magazine called WORN fashion journal. All of these jobs added up to where I am today. 

Mikayla:

Where do you find your unique style inspiration?

Alyssa:

For the most part it comes from my own imagination, but I do follow a handful of babe's Instagram accounts that constantly give me ideas and inspiration. @christinawinkelmann, @jengotch, and basically the entire @shop.bando team are big players in my outfit inspiration game! 

Mikayla:

What are some tips or advice you would give to someone that wants to go into the fashion and media industry? 

Alyssa:

Do your own thing! There's no right or wrong way to get into this field. Personally I think internships and hands on experience are much much more valuable than school courses, but you have to find what works for you. 

Mikayla:

What made you decide you did not want to pursue journalism? What was your experience like in the journalism program you had taken, and what school was it at? 

Alyssa:

I went to journalism school at Ryerson University, and honestly I wish I'd just stuck to internships. The media world is so fast paced right now, and I think schools have a hard time keeping up with new trends and tech advancements. I learned a lot of outdated information, and not much about social media or marketing yourself, which are such important elements to a career in journalism these days. 

In the end I decided not to go into journalism because of all the censorship. Everything is so heavily edited and controlled by what will garner the most clicks and advertiser dollars, which means journalism isn't really all that creative or exciting anymore. I wanted to be my own boss, write what I liked to write, and actually make a difference. None of the jobs I saw my peers applying for really appealed to me, so I chose to go out on my own and create a new job! 

Mikayla:

How do you make your Instagram pictures so perfect?! Is there a trick or method you use to capturing such pretty pastel images? 

Alyssa:

No tricks! I actually just do a bit of brightening right in the app before I post and that's it. The key to a great Instagram is curation, and I am really hyper aware of that in my feed. Everywhere I go I am looking for pastel magic to snap photos of, which means I always have a bank of photos to use at any moment. I call it "pastel hunting". 

Mikayla:

What has been your most proud achievement in your blogging / fashion career? 

Alyssa:

I'm getting a city guide feature in the September issue of Fashion magazine this September, so that's pretty high up there! 

Mikayla:

What do you think is the best service a blogger can provide to their readers? 

Alyssa:

Honesty. I'm so tired of reading blogs that sound the exact same and show nothing about real life. The best bloggers are those who open up and acknowledge all the crazy, hard, confusing and painful bits of life. 

Mikayla:

Are there other careers and/or hobbies you would like to explore in fashion and beauty towards the future? 

Alyssa:

I'd love to get into styling more, refine my photography skills, and one day turn my blog into a real life pastel shop!

Style Profile: Jeannette Breward

Jeannette Breward is a local photographer from Port Hope, Ontario. She has been doing photography as a hobby for over a decade, and five years as a side job. This is her first year doing full time photography - and she has made some major accomplishments!

Jeannette recently graduated from Ryserson university's Bachelor's Degree of Fine Art Photography program. She has been involved in some fun projects since - such as a 52 weeks project, and The Birthday Book Project. One of Jeannette's photos was also purchased by Ryerson, and will be installed at the school's conference room, in Toronto. The Timeraiser has also chosen to buy her work, and it will be auctioned off in a silent auction exhibition where people will bid volunteer hours to win it. Jeannette was also chosen to be a part of the Maximum Exposure: Crossroads exhibition at Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres in Toronto. Her work will be displayed there through June. 

Jeannette has such a creative mind, and shows her wild imagination and expression through her images. She is beyond talented - and one of the most humble artists I have ever met. Read her full interview with me below, and take a look at the lovely photos I captured of her in the woods! I am no professional by any means. Jeannette posed so beautifully - even though it was a weird experience for her to be in front of the lens instead of behind it for this shoot. Mikayla: 

What is it that you love about photography?

Jeanntte:

There are so many things that I love about photography! It is a way to express myself and my ideas and passions. I love capturing honest emotion and those brief moments in time and creating something lasting and beautiful from it that can be looked back on fondly forever. I love telling stories through images - and the fact that they are totally different for each viewer depending on their interpretation of my piece. That is what is so magical about photography - it captures people's personal stories, but it can also be used to create new and magical narratives for whoever spends some time with each piece.

Mikayla: 

You have done some fashion photography before, how is it different from what you usually shoot? (Weddings, conceptual, fine art, etc)

Jeannette:

Fashion photography definitely has some different elements to it. You want to make sure you are showing off the garments, accessories, and the model to their fullest extent. But it still uses many of the same principals I use in all of my other photography – find the light, use it to your best advantage, and create an image that is unique and interesting to look at.

Mikayla:

Do you have a favorite type of photography or anything in particular you love to shoot?

Jeannette:

This is a really hard question because there are SO many things I love to photograph. I guess to keep it simple, my favourite thing to photograph is portraits. Be that fashion, weddings, surreal creations. People are almost always in my photographs (although I am getting really into food photography lately as well! Haha).

Mikayla:

What did you like about Ryerson's fine art photography program?

Jeannette:

Everything! Haha No, but really. It’s a wonderful program. I completed my first year right out of high school and then went back many years later to complete my degree and it was the best decision I could have made. The professors are all amazing teachers and photographers working in the field. They provide amazing advice to grow your own work. Being around others with the same passions as you on a regular basis is beyond inspiring. And the school provided so many opportunities to have our work exhibited around Toronto. It was such a great experience.

Mikayla:

Talk about The Birthday Book Project, and what that experience has been like for you as one of the Canadian Photographers.

Jeannette:

I feel incredibly honoured to have been chosen to be one of 12 Canadian photographers collaborating on The Birthday Book Project. The goal is to photograph one person born on every day of the calendar year over the course of 2015, and then put those portraits together into a book in 2016. The project was the brain child of the wonderful Camila Gargantini . It’s been a lot of fun so far – connecting with the subjects, learning about the memories behind their birthdays. Mikayla:

Where do you get your inspiration from for your creative photography?

Jeannette:

So many different places! Song lyrics, novels, poetry, paintings, a beautiful spot I see while out on a walk, a gorgeous piece of architecture. Basically anywhere and everywhere!

Mikayla:

What are the names of some of your favorite photographers whom you look up to?

Jeannette:

Oh there are so many. One of my favourites has always been Gregory Crewdson. His work is so cinematic and haunting. The way he creates his elaborate scenes is incredible!

Sally Mann has also been incredibly inspiring – the honesty and beauty in her portraits is unparalleled in my eyes.

In terms of photographers with a more surreal body of work, the first photographer who’s work I saw that inspired me to start creating those types of pieces was Brooke Shaden. Her work is much more dark then my own in some ways, but it so striking and beautiful and her style is very recognizable. She is one of those young photographers who has managed to use her work to travel the world teaching and giving back, which is a huge goal for me.

I could go on and on here, but I’ll leave it at those three.

Mikayla:

What are some of your goals or aspirations as a photographer? (What else would you love to do with your career ex: traveling, start a new project, etc?)

Jeannette:

I definitely want to get my career to the point where it allows me to travel the world. I would love to see new places, walk on new soil, breathe the air of a different place! If my work allowed me to go there and create new art it would be a dream come true for sure! Some of my other goals include having my work published on a book cover and an album cover. So any aspiring musicians or authors out there that would like a custom piece created for your next project, drop me a line!

Style Profile: Zoë Innanen

I had the opportunity to meet up with the lovely and beautiful Zoë Innanen in the city of Toronto a little while ago. She is a Fashion Communications student at Ryerson University, and this is her first year. She kindly took some of her time from her busy schedule to collaborate with me for an interview on my blog! 

I met Zoë through social media, on Instagram. I reached out to her because we had two things in common: a love for fashion, and wanting acceptance to Ryerson Univerity for Fashion Communications. She applied in February 2014, and received an early acceptance in March 2014. (I intentionally took this year off to work on my portfolio (a requirement for applying) and will apply February 2015.) 

Zoë is from Cambridge, Ontario and now living in Toronto and enjoying the city! In her classes so far, she says she had been working on a "Title Project" and also cutting out patterns for the first sewing assignment. It sounds like an intense work load, but sure is worth it when it's something you love! 

Some of Zoë's past fashion accomplishments include volunteering with Daniel Drak and Robert Ott, and also helping out with the huge fashion show at Ryerson, Mass Exodus. Read more about Zoë's experiences, inspirations, and goals below, and take a look at her stunning photos!

Mikayla:

What are some of your favourite pieces in your wardrobe? Anything you can't live without?

Zoë:

Key pieces in my wardrobe consist of very simple but stylish basics like white tanks and cream knit
sweaters. I’m definitely a sweater-and-leggings girl in the fall and winter! I also believe no girl’s
wardrobe is complete without a good leather jacket. As for something I can’t live without, I usually resort to my Marc by Marc Jacobs handbag when going out and I never take off my gold wishbone necklace from Dogearred Inc.

Mikayla:

When did you first become to realize your love for fashion? Or has it always been something you
knew you loved?

Zoë:

I don’t think I’ve always loved fashion, however, I’ve always had a say in what I wear. I never wore jeans as a kid and went through a phase where everything I wore had a horse or something horse related on it. I started to explore and find my love of fashion and style in middle school and started to slowly reach out of the typical brand name trend that was very popular at that time. I think my mom also influenced my love of fashion by expanding her boundaries in the way she dresses and the clothes she purchases.

Mikayla:

Who and what are your inspirations or role models in the fashion industry?

Zoë:

I found out about Alexa Chung in middle school and have loved her ever since! I love all things London based and appreciate her individuality in the way she dresses. I love Anna Dello Russo because she always takes risks and never conforms to how she is expected to dress for her age. My all-time favourite artist is Frida Kahlo, and I find her inspiring in art, fashion and life in general.

Mikayla:

How would you describe yourself as a person, and how does that influence what you wear? (If at
all). 

Zoë:

I would say I am a pretty outgoing and social person which reflects in the sense that I don’t like to blend in with what I wear. I love to wear something eye-catching or unique. 

Mikayla:

While completing your portfolio, what did you find the most challenging task was? 

Zoë:

For me the most challenging task was sewing my garment! Luckily my mom and grandma know how to sew so they pointed me in the right direction when I was having trouble.

Mikayla:

When applying to Ryerson, was there any doubt in your mind at all about being accepted? Did
you have a back up plan? 

Zoë:

Of course there was doubt! I was confident that the work I gave in was the best I could do, however I always had doubt that my best wouldn’t be good enough. I applied to similar college programs at Seneca, Humber and George Brown, but fortunately I got into my first choice at Ryerson. I think if I hadn’t gotten in, I would've taken a year off to work and tried again with a different portfolio.

Mikayla:

What things are you looking forward to most at Ryerson? In your classes, and also living in the
city of Toronto.

Zoë:

I’m looking forward to meeting people who share my interests and learning new things that I’m interested in! I look forward to improving my illustration skills and building my creative portfolio and knowledge of the industry in the next four years! As for Toronto, there are are so many opportunities to meet people in the business and attend events! I can’t wait.

Mikayla:

What do you hope to become after this program? Any certain career path in mind?

Zoë:

I am interested in buying, styling, merchandising and even working in a magazine right now, but I hope the next four years in this program opens my eyes to all sorts of different career paths!

Style Profile: Grace Lovekin

Owner of popular women's clothing boutique, Mad Monkey Clothing, mother of two boys, and Humber College Fashion program mentor... that is not even the beginning of describing what a lovely and committed woman that Grace Lovekin is! I got the chance to sit down and talk fashion and all about owning a store with her.

Mad Monkey Clothing started out as "Xtreme Clothing" back in September 2005, and was later purchased by current owner, Grace, on February 1st, 2008. Fashion has always been something Grace liked - but never studied , at least professionally. She graduated from Western University for Psychology and Women's studies, and not until working at mad Monkey Clothing for two years, she proposed to buy the store, and was eventually given the approval. With no business or fashion education background, it is such a neat thing that Grace has made herself an ultimate fashion-entrepreneur. 

Grace takes on responsibilities at Mad Monkey such as visual merchandising, taking care of inventory, paperwork, and taking trips to the city for buying. She goes into her store almost every day, and is recently able to get some weekends off! In those times off, and when she is not working hard at her store, Grace says she loves to go longboarding, as well as mentor young girls and give speeches at Humber College, and attend fashion week and events.

Read further for all of the questions I asked Grace, and her interesting and note-taking-worthy answers she gave me!

Mikayla:

Do you have a certain personal style? If so, how would you describe it?

Grace:

My personal style would be described as casual. I love bohemian inspired clothing but I also enjoy the simplicity of classic lines. I suppose I am a fusion of all those things...how? I'm not sure but I pull it off.

Mikayla:

How has your style evolved over the years (if at all) from being a teen, to now?

Grace:

I wish I could go back to being the teen me, I used to wear whatever I wanted without thinking twice! Oh the freedom! But seriously, my style is always evolving! I'm a mom of two and I quiet often think, "I can't wear that" but then I rethink it and make it happen in some other way. As you get older, or as your body changes it's important to adapt and evolve your look to today's style and fashion.

Mikayla:

Would you say that your own personal style reflects what you sell at Mad Monkey?

Grace:

Mad Monkey Clothing is most definitely a reflection of how I dress but also my lifestyle. We sell street wear, surf brands and lifestyle brands which all speak to me or my past in some way. My style is definitely not defined by one brand which is probably why I have so many brands in the shop, they all have elements which I love and couldn't live without.

Mikayla:

What are some of your favourite looks for Fall 2014 so far?

Grace:

Fall is probably most people's favourite season, and I'm excited to see the crop top trend continue with high waisted skinnies. The look I'm most excited about seeing people rock this season is the 90's grunge look. Plaid, ripped jeans, combat boots, oversized crop sweaters and patterned dresses. Welcome back 90's!

Mikayla:

When you took on Mad Monkey Clothing, did you feel pressured at all, or feel overwhelmed?

Grace:

I took over Mad Monkey Clothing in February 2008. February has 28 days in the month and that year we had 12 snow storms. "Freaking out" is an understatement about my first month as a business owner. But I worked hard, spread the word about my little business and made it work. Because I was determined that snow couldn't beat me!

Mikayla:

Being a young, successful woman in a small community, many young individuals look up to people like you. What would be your advice to those who want to pursue a career in the fashion industry?

Grace:

The fashion industry is a huge world with tons of opportunity. However, as glamorous as people believe these jobs to be, they are hard. And you need a good brain and tons of creativity to survive. Some people believe I have the most magical, amazing and fun job in the world, it is that, but it's also tons of work. Work hard, know your stuff, become an expert in your field and people won't be able to refuse you. Be better than anyone else!

Mikayla:

When you were my age (18 or so) who did you look up to? What inspired you?

Grace:

When I was your age (and don't laugh), I loved Britney Spears. And this is not the Britney we know now, but the new, exciting, beautiful girl she started off as being. She wore what she wanted, and always pushed the limits of fashion. She was unique, new and she could dance! I was captivated! It's funny, Britney and I are the same age and still have a lot in common, but if there's anything I've learned from her, it's not to shave your head, surround yourself with positive people and never give up!  She's still going...and so am I!

Mikayla:

What did you learn by taking Philosophy and Women's Studies that you see applying to your day job now?

Grace:

It's funny, I do not have a degree in business, or accounting or math, or even fashion studies for that matter. I have a degree in Philosophy and Women's Studies. But I think it suits me just fine. The philosophy side of me allows me to think critically and helps me to make hard business decisions while the women's studies side gives me ways in which I can relate to the many different women perspectives and personalities.

Mikayla:

Since you are very busy and have a lot of responsibilities, how do you manage it? Any coping strategies you have learned over the years?

Grace:

How do I manage my crazy life? Good question. One day at a time. But I must say, having positive and supportive people in your life and in your business is key. Finding good employees and managing them is quite possibly the hardest thing I've ever done in my job. But I've had the pleasure to have worked with some amazing girls who have helped me grow my business to what it is today.

Mikayla:

Are there any other fashion or beauty related things you have yet to accomplish?

Grace:

I'm really happy working hard at the shop and growing Mad Monkey Clothing into a bigger and better business each year. I do eventually want to teach young people all the things that I've learned by being an entrepreneur. I've started working with Humber College and I hold work shops and give talks on how to get started etc. It's fun and I love sharing!

Style Profile: Jahlina Akleh

Meet Jahlina. She is a graduated student of the Fashion Marketing and Merchandising program at the Academy of Design in Toronto, a full time Visual Merchandiser at Urban Planet in Cobourg, and a part time Runway Teacher at Mode Elle in Belleville. Jahlina sure knows how to put together the latest looks on the mannequins, and how to put herself together as well. She not only follows Urban Planet's head office book and suggestions, but she also puts her own personal touch into her work. She is even trusted to head up to the Whitby Urban Planet on a regular basis, to help with their visual merchandising as well. 

Jahlina has been a staff member at Mode Elle for two years now, at the Canadian Model and Talent Convention. She has also been teaching lately; She instructs aspiring models about runway posing, posture, and poise. Jahlina is highly looked up to in this industry, especially by her students. With her sweet personality and years of experience, whoever enters her class is sure to be inspired and taught things they will surely remember.

Being a model on the side, Jahlina sure knew how to strike a pose for me while I was photographing her! Read about her experiences in her lovely interview below.

Mikayla: 

What are some of your favourite pieces in your closet?

Jahlina:

I'd definitely have to start off by saying my shoe collection! (Because you can't just have one favourite heel, the more the better!) My Micheal Kors watch is my favourite accessory, and I do love my oversized t-shirts - they are perfect to pair with a nice pair of jeans and an accent jewelry piece.

Mikayla:

How does your style reflect who you are as a person?

Jahlina:

I love mixing pieces and wearing things that express how I'm feeling that day, I don't necessarily follow trends, I just like being comfortable and would consider myself to be an outgoing person, and like trying new things! I believe that my style matches that exactly.

Mikayla:

What was your favourite thing about the program you took at the Academy of Design?

Jahlina:

At the Academy of Design, I had teachers that were very well known and in the fashion industry. They knew what they were talking about and I learned so much from them and their first hand knowledge.

Mikayla:

Do you think that it prepared you enough for the work force in that area?

Jahlina:

I think so; It was a very hands on program and I had a lot of material/work to do in a short period of time, which helped me cope with the pressure of time management. One class I took was strictly visual merchandising, and that's how I found out what I wanted to do with my career. I have always loved fashion but never knew where to go with it! The school definitely opened up a lot of avenues for me.

Mikayla:

Do you ever feel pressured as a fashion merchandiser? Or are you ever stuck and unsure of what to put together? 

Jahlina:

Very much so, there are always time limits and rules to be followed like every job. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so when something doesn't work out, or I don't have the products to create the beautiful walls head office wants, I get a little frustrated. I simply just walk away and take a break from what I'm doing in order to refresh myself. You can never get anywhere with a frazzled mind!

Mikayla:

When creating an outfit combination for mannequins at work, what do you look for? Colour? Symmetry? Accents? 

Jahlina:

Every wall display I do is always by colour, I then use prints/patterns and bust forms to to create symmetry in the wall so everything is clean and makes sense! (I can be pretty picky.) On the other hand, mannequin displays can go any which way, so it's all depending on what feel I'm going for, I normally choose by what product is in the store and use trendy pieces to create looks I hope will catch the customer's eye.

Mikayla:

Describe the last display you put together. What were the mannequins dressed like? What trends, styles, colours, etc? 

Jahlina:

The most recent visual project I did was a big one...! In 3 days I switched a whole Urban Planet store around to get ready with our fall/back to school products. It consisted of a 6 panel wall of jeans, a sweat pant wall, hoodie wall, yoga pant wall and the list goes on and on. Each of the walls had their own marketing poster/mannequins and stickers to go on the walls and shelves, and specific folds for the pants needed to be followed. The colours in the walls always go from lightest to darkest and by style when dealing with bottoms. 

Mikayla:

What are your future plans? Are you leaning more towards a modeling industry, or visual merchandiser?

Jahlina:

At this point in my life I'm really enjoying both, and multi-tasking between the two. I would like to see within the next year or two where they take me, and decide then!

Mikayla:

What kind of advice would you give to a young, aspiring model?

Jahlina:

BE CONFIDENT. The modeling industry is a tough industry. It may look very glamorous, and can be, but it takes work to get to that stage. You have to be able to take criticism and turn it into something to work on. You are going to hear a lot of "no's" before you hear that one yes, but you need to believe in yourself!

Mikayla:

Being a teacher to young individuals, what do you think is most important that they learn from you and about walking on the runway? (I know that appearance is very strict in the modeling industry, and some younger girls may find it hard to find self confidence. Do you try to help them with that as well?)

Jahlina:

Definitely the number one thing is confidence!! I am very clear with my students that you have to love yourself and be confident in who you are and what you do, in order to succeed. Not only in the modeling industry, but life as well. I teach my students (both male and female) the proper poise and posture for the runway, then I teach them various turns and poses to use on the runway. I always remind them to be confident and not to be scared in my class. They are there to learn and can ask me any questions they like.
