Malibu Barbie

Yesterday was my birthday, and this was what I wore!

I bought this pink & yellow "Malibu Barbie" maxi dress at Kittens Den in March, with the intention of saving it to debut on my 18th birthday in July. I wore it for the first time yesterday around town and out to dinner with my family, and I got so many compliments on it! It is super bright and screams summer! I paired it with my usual Topshop sandals, and some yellow "lemon-drop" Sugar Coated earrings.

Pink Grapefruit Manicure

This time I painted on an inverted manicure in my favourite colours (pink & yellow) and turned them into grapefruits! This was a look inspired by an image I had seen on a pinterest photo, and also a bag that I love!

Style Profile: Katelyn Downes

Katelyn is a high school student at CDCI West, who loves clothes, shopping, and hair styling. She is a sweet, young fashionista from my hometown, finding her passion in life and what she wishes to do for post secondary.

Katelyn loves hair styling, and has actually gotten tips from a family friend and well-known local Boutique & Salon owner, Haley Campbell. Together they research schools, and Katelyn is constantly seeking Haley's advice and hair tips.

Here is the interview I got to have with Miss Katelyn Downes, along with her stylish photos! Enjoy!

Mikayla:

What words come to mind when you think about the way you dress?

Katelyn:

The words that come to mind when I think of the way that I dress would be comfy, unique, and trendy.

Mikayla:

What clothing stores are your go-to places to shop?

Katelyn:

My go to places to shop are H&M, Garage, Aeropostale, American Eagle, and Victoria's Secret Pink.

Mikayla:

How do you keep up with trends, and do you feel that you stay "on-trend"?

Katelyn:

The way that I keep up with trends is when see an outfit or a piece of clothing that I like, I try to find and buy something that resembles it but is more comfortable or cheaper. I think that I stay on trend in my own way, by recreating outfits and modifying trends to the way I usually dress.

Mikayla:

What are your thoughts towards the fashion industry in general?

Katelyn:

My thoughts towards the fashion industry are that fashion plays a big part in everybody's life. Everybody has their own style and also, most stores have a distinct look or style that they sell and just because that store or fashion item is popular it doesn't mean you have to buy it. I think that fashion is very influential when it comes to people's personalities and the way they act.

Mikayla:

Does fashion play a big part in your life? Why or why not?

Katelyn:

I think that fashion plays a huge part in my life because I love shopping and trying new things clothing wise. I love recreating looks and being different from other people through my style.

Mikayla:

Being a student in high school, who do you think starts trends? Is there a certain individual, group, or what would you say?

Katelyn:

I think that being in high school, the people who starts the trends are usually the "popular" kids. Both boys and girls have an effect on each other and I think that most girls want to dress like the popular girl and be like her and the same thing goes for the boys, with the popular boy among them.

Mikayla:

What does the word "beauty" mean to you?

Katelyn:

The word beauty means individuality to me. Everybody has their own sense of beauty, and no matter what things are popular, everybody has their own way of expressing their true beauty.

Mikayla:

You are currently looking at exploring the job of a Hair Stylist, what excites you about this career path? What Hair Trends excite you the most right now? (I'm currently loving bows & hair chalk at the moment!)

Katelyn:

The things that excite me about being a hairstylist are being able to create different things using hair, and making somebody feel beautiful. I love curling hair and braiding, so those hair trends excite me the most.

Mikayla:

Haley Campbell, owner of Faun Boutique in Port Hope has known you for most of your life. Would you say that she has inspired you to be interested in doing hair styling, since she does that as her job?

Katelyn:

Haley has definitely inspired me to do hair. Seeing her cut hair and style it inside her very own salon, is very interesting to me. When Haley had first told me that she was going to school to be a hair dresser, I didn't really think it was that cool, but she talked to me about what she was learning and different things you can do with hair colour and hair cuts and that made me interested!

Mikayla:

How has Haley helped you (if at all) with your steps towards fulfilling your hair styling career? What kind of advice does she give you?

Katelyn:

Haley has let me watch her at her store/salon, Faun Boutique, which has made me want to become a hairdresser even more. She gives me tips and has suggested programs that are the best for post secondary, including the ones she had done. Any questions I have about certain hairstyles she answers them and tells me the best way to approach them.

What Katelyn Wore:

Shirt: Word of Mouth
Shorts: Urban Planet
Bag: H&M
Shoes: Keds

July Favourites

My July Favourites!

From left to right: Hot Pink Tangle Teezer, Cake Satin Sugar Dry Shampoo, Daisy by Marc Jacobs, Feline HD Eyeliner by Lise Waiter, EOS Shave Cream, Floral Patterned Shorts with Pom-poms.

Feline HD Eyeliner by Lise Waiter: I used to always rely on my Stila Stay all Day black waterproof liner, but I found that I was never looking forward to repurchasing that specific eyeliner because I found it a little pricey, especially for the amount given in each tube. I had asked a beauty expert one day while I was out shopping if she could show me some comparable liners, and this was the one she came out with. Not only is it $6.00 (Can) cheaper, it also has 1.2 ml of product, vs the Stila one that only has 0.016 oz. (0.473 ml). I think that for the most part it does the same job with the same familiar application tip.

Cake Satin Sugar Dry Shampoo: This dry shampoo smells sugary sweet - like cupcakes! It is great for my hair in between washes and leaves no residue or unwanted white/powdery colours behind in my dark, brown hair (like most dry shampoos unfortunately do.) Right now, I have the travel size (just to try it out) but I would repurchase in the bigger version once this one runs out.

Daisy by Marc Jacobs: This is my favourite perfume of the month, and probably every month, if I had to choose! Not only does it come in a beautiful bottle with flowers on the cap in my favourite colours (pink and yellow), it also smells fantastic! It's sweet and beautiful, just like a bouquet of fresh-cut daises. Mine is the 125 ml bottle, but it is also available in a variation of sizes such as 75 ml, 0.24 oz (roll on), 1.7 oz, and 3.4 oz.

EOS Shave Cream: This cream is great to use in the shower and leaves my legs silky smooth for a full 24 hours! It also smells great, like pomegranate and raspberries. What makes me love it even more is the pink bottle it comes in!

Hot Pink Tangle Teezer: This hair tool has to be the most handy thing ever! My hair is very long, thick, and coarse. Having this kind of hair sure does have it's difficulties in maintaining it, so this tool right here becomes my best friend every once and again. It can sure comb through tangles and does not hurt at all! It's unique shape and different lengths of teeth bring a whole new level of technology to hair brushes. I can rely on this brush for anything I need it for with my hair. Whether if it's just by using it after my shower, styling, or those desperate times after I have gone swimming and my hair is in knots! I bought mine at my local Sally's Beauty Supply store, but you can also find and order them in many different colours off of their website here.

If you were wondering about the shorts, I reviewed them here already in a previous outfit post. :)

Thanks for reading!
